Diabetes is a life-long condition in which the blood sugar level is too high and the body cannot use it properly. Diabetes occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin that it produces. Worldwide the number of people with diabetes is more than 425 million and is predicted to increase to 552 million people by the year 2030. The International Diabetes Federation estimates the prevalence of Diabetes (Type 2) in Qatar (all nationalities) to be 13.5%.The Qatar STEPwise survey conducted in 2012 including Qatari adults aged 18-64 years showed that 12.7% of the respondents had been diagnosed with diabetes in the previous year.
